Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay immediately became enthralled after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used to engage people. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. Although DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste belonging to one of juries. As a result of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small shortly after she graduated from college. In this role, she launched her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
